Poetry-Over the Years

I remember writing "Bullets" as a seventh grader in 2023. Even though my midterm exams were happening quite literally the next day, I jumped up from my chair when I had the notion of writing a poem. Although now I believe the poem lacked a sensible rhythm and overall cohesion, the poem still means a lot to me because it was the first time I went oh I like writing things like this.

I attempted to rewrite "Bullets" (to a certain extent) in my poem "Bare Hands and Eyes". This poem encompasses all the things I loved about poem back then– the movement, the colors, the sounds and textures that could be distinctly observed even if they only came from a few words. I think the speaker's voice is one of my favorite aspects of this poem.

I think the reason why I kept writing poems during all these years was because of the genuine pride I felt from finishing them. Even to this day, when I finish writing a piece of poetry, I experience the same about of joy and glee as I did when I first wrote "Bullets".

This collection of poems was produced during 2023~2024. Looking back, I liked to play a lot with imagery in my works because I liked the explosiveness of it. I experimented with empowering the speaker voice of my poems, such as leaving large gaps between stanzas to indicate a shift in speed/tone. These methods paved way for the more visually creative endeavors I pursued in 2025.
