Reflection
G10:
I cannot overstate how much this course helped me understand visual arts as a whole. Before that I was just drawing to my heart's content. It was only after my G10 course did I realize the importance of research, experimentation, documentation, and other key steps when it comes to art-making. Any setback or mess-up felt like part of the process. It was after my G10 course that I was positive I wanted to continue taking VA until I graduate.
So what do I do in school that's different from the studio?
At school I learned about art history and the process of making art. Although studio work was cool, school was what finally made me start keeping a visual arts journal. We were given the option to do it digitally but I insisted to make a physical version because I enjoyed the scrapbook-like aesthetic of them.
School was where I explored potential topics before finalizing on my big question. Without my school's visual arts course, I probably would've never tried clay sculpting, mosaics, or charcoal. Most of these projects were largely experimental, so I embraced the outcome no matter what. I really have to say, my school artworks were what made me feel less terrible about messing up and more excited about starting over again.
